In the 2005 novel On Beauty, which has been described as a ‘transatlantic comic saga’, British author Zadie Smith follows the lives of a mixed-race British/American family, addressing ethnic and cultural differences in the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as the nature of beauty, and the clash between liberal and conservative academic values. Loosely based on EM Forster’s novel Howards End, it was shortlisted for the 2005 Man Booker Prize.?
