SERAPHIM TRIO: SLAVIC PASSION
Over the past four years, Seraphim Trio have journeyed right through the classical traditions of the piano trio, celebrating the Viennese masters Beethoven and Schubert and exploring the greatest hits of the piano trio from Haydn to Sculthorpe, Jankowski and Mills.
In 2019 they turn their attention to the Slavic nations with performances of Smetana, Dvorak, Suk and more. This concert is bookended by the Czech composers Joseph Suk and Bedrich Smetana. Suk’s rich lyricism is apparent in his beautiful Elegie, a work based on Julius Zeyer’s epic poem ‘Vyšehrad’, set in Czech antiquity. Smetana’s piano trio is a painfully beautiful lament to his beloved daughter Bedriška, who died of scarlet fever during a tragic period of the composer’s life. Also on the program are a trio by Fanny Mendelssohn and a piano trio which is a new commission by Australia’s own Richard Mills.
