In occupation: Pastoral settlement in the Wimmera
In 2011 the Gallery acquired a set of ten watercolour sketches by an anonymous colonial artist visiting a group of pastoral settlements in the south-east Wimmera district between the Richardson and Avoca Rivers.
In most cases, these remarkable drawings are the only visual record of long-gone pastoral homesteads and reveal aspects of early white settlement in the area, and of relationships between pastoral occupiers of the land and the Indigenous people.
The exhibition includes the full set of ten drawings, together with silhouette portraits of the inhabitants of the properties and early pastoral maps. It will also include photographs of the original views today, and artefacts gathered on the homestead sites.
