MONTAGES: THE FULL CUT 1999–2015:

TRACEY MOFFATT & GARY HILLBERG

This exhibition brings together for the first time the full suite of eight montage films by artist Tracey Moffatt and her long-time collaborator Gary Hillberg, spanning 16 years of their collaborative practice.

Montages: The Full Cut, 1999–2015 is an ode to cinema and to the cinematic form, offering unprecedented insight into the stereotypes that populate our collective cultural imagination. In this suite of montages, the artists have spliced together thousands of clips from iconic Hollywood films, telemovies and arthouse cinema to create new narratives which tap into the humour and pathos of art, revolution, love and destruction.

Moffatt is regarded as one of Australia’s most important artists. Her work, created using a deliberately stylised artifice that references the history of art and photography, communicates meanings of universal significance.

Montages: The Full Cut, 1999–2015 was curated and developed by Artspace, Sydney and is touring nationally in partnership with Museums and Galleries of NSW.

Part of PHOTO 2021, a new international festival of photography.
